We leave tomorrow and today was filled with shopping, packing and last minute preparation. For weeks I have been creating my list and checking it multiple times to make sure I have everything. It is always a fine balance to ensure you have all of the essentials....and yet to make sure you also have a few things that make the trip fun and comfortable. I was sure to throw in my Marmot Solitude Hoody, which is better than a soft afghan hand knitted by a close friend. I also tossedin some wet wipes, a good book and some citrus flavored Orbitz chewing gum. Please e-mail us at

We have our tickets, our shots, our gear and our guidebooks - we are ready to climb Mt. Kenya! Oh no, I just realized I left the office today without the Jaws belay devices - a minor hic-up. We are so excited to have James McKee (good friend), Valerie Hovland (close friend and climbing partner) and Karsten Delap (Friend, AMGA certified rock guide with Fox Mountain Guides, and all around rope gun) joining us for this big adventure. Brad and I are in search of the Diamond Couloir on the South Face while Karsten, Val and James seek the Normal Route on the East side of the mountain. No matter what routes we end up climbing, we are sure to have great fun traveling to Kenya. With the exception of Brad, we will all be returning to the states in a couple weeks. Brad will stay on to climb Kilimanjaro with Bayard Clark, Alex Clark and Jamie Clark and I will post about their climb upon my early return. As the trip approaches we will do final shopping and packing which will include trips to the drug store, shopping at Neptune's for last minute gear, loads of laundry, and begging my sister and Dion to give lots of love to the plants and animals. At 5,199 meters, Mt. Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa after Mt. Kilimanjaro. It resembles some of the greatest peaks found in the Dolomites, Canadian Rockies and Patagonia. Mt. Kenya is a rock climbers dream come true. Mt Kenya boasts three summits: Lenana, Nelion and Batian with Batian being the highest. An estimated 500 people climb the mountain each year with approximately 200 reaching the summit of Nelion and a mere 50 reaching Batian. With any luck we will be the only five people on the mountain. Keep checking in as more updates are to follow. Our dear friend and web creator, Tom Wilson, will be assisting us with postings throughout our climb. Time for a little rest... |
