Moving on Up the Mountain

Brad called this morning to report that the team did in fact take a rest day at the current camp at 11,800 feet. They plan to advance to 14,200 feet while we are sleeping tonight. I thought it was very cool that we received the photo from the I-Phone but Brad did say the batteries were dead on that phone so not to expect anymore. I was of course very bummed at this news as I love the pictures. I have looked at them a hundred times and I was hoping for more. Brad is also conserving his phone battery too as the batteries go quickly. The colder temps tend to drain things faster than normal.

Brad phoned at 8:00 this morning, which I am most certain is 5:00 pm in Tanzania. He wanted me to let everyone know that the guys had a very big day to get to camp after gaining just over 3,000 vertical feet. They are now at 11,800'. It is not yet decided if they will remain here for a rest day tomorrow or trudge forward. I think the plan is to play it by ear and see how everyone is feeling tomorrow morning when they wake up. If they do not take a rest day here, they will certainly take on at the next camp.
The weather remains absolutely perfect with clear skies and great views. Brad hopes to call every day, but do not be alarmed if we do not hear from him one day. We joked the entire time we were on Kenya saying we got better cell coverage in Africa than we do from our home....but on a cloudy day, the phones do not work very well....and sometimes the mountain can even be in the way. I think the boys are having great fun and great weather.
It really is a wonderful experience to climb in a third world country. Time sorta stands still when you do a climb of this magnitude. You find yourself just getting into a very nice rythym. All you have to do is eat, sleep and get yourself from point A to point B. You are living out of a little duffle and the small pack on your back. You have a lot of time to think and to reflect. You suddenly treasure every little experience and long for the amenities back home. You learn to love the sun because it keeps you warm. You appreciate the hot cup of tea when you wake up and when you arrive at camp. You notice every body part and appreciate that you are healthy. It truly is amazing.
Until I hear from Brad again!
