Well, tied into a climbing rope anyway!  We've had a wonderful time on Rai Lay beach in Thailand.... climbing on the beach, with waves crashing below us.  Truly amazing.  It's been a great experience and in addition to getting out onto the rock and into the waves, we have also been able to fine tune all the details of some FANTASTIC Thailand/Rai Lay executive retreats and corporate incentive programs we are developing.

Views from some of our climbs...

Reflecting on the Summit Push

Alarms sounded at 11:00 pm.  The team woke up to crystal clear skies and decent temperatures (the temp hovered between 10 - 20 degrees farenheit with little to no wind).  After a little breakfast they started heading for the summit at midnight.  They found themselves at the top at Gillman's Point in time to enjoy the sunrise and yes, a bottle of champagne that they graciously shared with other climbers that were also in the spirit of celebration.

Getting to Gillman's was the most difficult part of the summit push as the team scaled very steep slopes of scree.  It is two steps forward and one step backward. The summit day demands a hefty 4,000 feet in elevation gain in these conditions.

After an hour of celebration at Gillman's it was an easy one and half hours along a ridge to the true summit.  It is on this walk that they got glimpses of the remaining glaciers on the mountain and realized the magnitude of their accomplishment.

They did a fast descent (skiing the scree) back to high camp (15,600ft) for a quick lunch break.  And then as the saying goes....what goes up must come down.  They descended all the way to 12,000 feet.  So while they gained 4,000 feet on summit day, their legs had to endure over 7,000 feet of downhill on that same day.  Big undertaking by all measures.

This morning they had an easier six hour hike to the trailhead.  The weather was not so kind dumping buckets on them the entire hike out.  For some reason, this is acceptable as you no longer care if you are wet as a lovely hotel (with hot shower and cold beer) is waiting for you at the end.  Tomorrow is a day of relaxation by the pool followed by evening flights back across the ocean.  Everyone is anxious to return.

Brad called early this morning to report that the team had arrived back to a low and safe camp at 12,000 feet and they decided to take a much deserved rest. They will be spending one more night on the mountain.   Tonight while we are all sleeping they will hike out to the trailhead and catch a ride to their hotel for those warm showers and soft beds.  Team is in both good spirits and good health.  Congratulations you guys, you rocked it!

The phone rang at 11:57 pm and it was Brad telling me the team was working their way down from the summit.  THEY DID IT.  He sounded very excited to report the news.  The call was dropped due to poor coverage in our home....but ten minutes later, Brad's Mom called to report the same news.  She said everyone was doing fine and they hoped to hike all the way down and to nice hotel tonight.  This will be a long day after the big summit push and then now a huge effort to get down.  It is possible they will break the descent up in two days but not likely.  We will all see how much they really want that hot shower and real bed.
